Making financial
wellness easy

Payflex by Aetna

PayFlex makes it easy to spend the money in your tax-advantaged healthcare account using a debit card for eligible expenses.

PayFlex wanted to help users better manage their accounts and make informed decisions about how to spend their healthcare dollars. Through a stakeholder workshop, user research, and rapid prototyping, we designed a conceptual prototype to validate a mobile app concept with customers. What started as a conceptual exploration received enthusiastic feedback from the client, leading them to expand the scope of work to design and build the full experience.

Visioning the possible

We set a vision for the future state experience through a workshop for client stakeholders to uncover requirements, better understand the business and technical needs, and align of key objectives for the experience.

Design testing with users

Using an interactive, low-fidelity prototype, I used design testing to validate the requirements and flows uncovered in the workshop.

Insights included:

  • Navigation was effective, but participants wanted a single view of all their account types

  • Participants liked the idea of having coupons and offers sent to them as push notifications

  • 'File a Claim' was not a clear call-to-action, and the verbiage around moving money needed to be refined

Final design and build

We worked closely with product and development teams to produce the app for iOS and Android. As a design-led project, we created full flows and assets for delivery to development, along with animations and interactive prototypes to bring the experience to life.
