UBS wanted to engage clients in an elevated conversation about wealth— empowering them to understand their full financial picture and partner with their advisor to plan for the future. Advisor relationships are at the core of the UBS client experience, and we built an experience that enhances those relationships to provide clients with a more intuitive, robust digital product experience.

Balancing business and user needs

We conducted a workshop with UBS to set goals for the future state experience, understand pain points, and define and prioritize MVP features. UBS financial advisors needed insights into client behavior to provide better advice, and an easier way to manage their many client relationships. User research with clients revealed an opportunity for financial education and highlighted the need for better self-service capabilities.

Bringing clarity to a complex system

The existing digital experiences were outdated, with lengthy and cumbersome flows. Our goal was to enable client self-service while better capturing, analyzing, and displaying data to deliver tailored advice beyond just investment outcomes. We integrated new features and redesigned existing functionality into a unified experience for clients.

Exploring through design

Using rapid prototyping I explored various interaction patterns and layouts to find the best way to communicate the concept of financial planning over time to UBS clients. We tested two layouts — a view of goals over time, and a timeline-based approach.

Usability testing

We conducted an in-person usability study using a representative sample of 35 high net worth individuals, ages 50-75. The results were promising. A few takeaways:

Ease of Use → 93% found the app easy and intuitive to use, which suggests the design is largely effective for the target demographic.

Download Likelihood → 76% indicated they would download the app after using it, signaling strong interest but leaving room to explore potential barriers to adoption for the remaining 24%.

Developing a design system

Collaborated with UBS brand teams and UI designers to establish a robust design language and pattern library, enabling UBS to scale a consistent product experience.

A simplified experience

The app provides a unified view of clients’ total wealth, key functionalities, and new features designed to help them collaborate with their advisors on future planning—differentiating UBS from other financial institutions.
